Our energy

Cogeneration is the process of simultaneous production, in the same plant, of electrical energy and thermal energy, the latter usually used for heating buildings. This way, the efficiency of the system increases to, and exceeds, 80%.

Moncalieri power plant

The Moncalieri power plant has the most advanced technologies for the simultaneous production of electricity and heat and is, together with the North Turin plant, the main source of heat that feeds Turin’s district heating network.

The plant consists of two natural gas-fuelled combined-cycle cogeneration plants, the 2nd GT and the 3rd GT, with a total electrical output of about 800 MW and a thermal output in cogeneration mode of about 520 MW.

The two cogenerators achieve electrical efficiencies of over 57% and, in cogeneration mode, over 87%. There is also a heat integration and reserve plant within the power plant with a total capacity of 141 MWt.

  • Gas turbine generating approximately 270 MW of electrical power

  • Heat recovery steam generator, three pressure levels, fed with hot exhaust gases from the gas turbine, without flue gas by-pass stack

  • Condensing steam turbine with a nominal capacity of approximately 130 MWe, with regulated low-pressure steam extraction to produce heat for the district heating network

  • Heat production system for the district heating network in the form of superheated water at 120 °C
  • Gas turbine generating approximately 260 MW of electrical power

  • Heat recovery steam generator, three pressure levels, fed with hot exhaust gases from the gas turbine, without flue gas by-pass stack

  • Condensing steam turbine with a nominal capacity of approximately 130 MWe, with regulated low-pressure steam extractions to produce heat for the district heating network

  • Heat production system for the district heating network in the form of superheated water at 120 °C.

EMAS registration

The Moncalieri power plant has an environmental management system in compliance with the EMAS Regulation, which aims to implement continuous improvement in environmental performance and to publish an annual Environmental Declaration, validated through specific audits. EMAS registration, according to Regulation (EC) no. 1221/2009, is one of the most sought-after and selective achievements in the environmental management of a production site. The power plant, which already has a certified system for environmental management UNI EN ISO 14001:2004, obtained EMAS registration number IT-000749.
